Light Codes
(an offering for the collective heart)
The idea of a beginning or an end doesn’t quite fit into the holistic framework from which I perceive the world, but I’ll call this Substack a beginning, as in the thought has occurred to me on maybe half a dozen occasions to publish one and it happens to be now1.
The title of this first post, Light Codes, was also the name of an exhibition I curated at 1053 Gallery last winter, wherein I brought together 12 artists who use photographic processes and the language of light to transport viewers into new realms.
Photography, derived from the words photo and graphein literally means to write or paint with light. Roland Barthes, in his seminal text, Camera Lucida, admitted his fascination with photography had something to do with his fascination with death, the subject of the photograph representing that which no longer exists.
I envision this Substack as a weaving of my multi-hyphenate interests, a process that mirrors the curation of exhibitions, which I’ve come to realize is also a lot like writing2. There will be posts about art, death, herbalism, healing modalities and spirituality, among other topics, all of which will attempt to harmonize ordinary reality with the divine.
In music, the definition of a harmony line is, a set of notes that are played or sung at the same time as a melody, but are different from the melody. Harmony lines support the melody and add richness and texture to the music.
At this time it’s more important than ever for us to remember who we really are and the magic that surrounds us at all times. May these posts add a kind of richness and texture to your fertile ground.
Should you choose to give an offering of support for my work, know that I will continue to pay it forward into my community. Thank you for reading.
With love,
Lindsay
Now as in all we have is this precious present moment. Now as in we don’t know what tomorrow holds. Now as in I’m ready to put the words and ideas I’ve been incubating since the start of the pandemic into the world. Now as in: dear followers, hold me accountable.
More on this in a coming post.
